What is ABA therapy?

Applied behavior analysis (ABA), also called Behavior Engineering a scientific discipline concerned with applying empirical techniques based upon the principles of learning to change behavior of social significance. Proven by time, since 1969 many scientific journals have published the efficacy of ABA therapy. ABA has produced remarkably powerful interventions in fields such as education, developmental disabilities and autism, clinical psychology, behavioral medicine, organizational behavior management, and a host of other fields and populations. Behavior analysts have long recognized that developing interventions capable of improving client behavior. ABA has been very successful in public school systems for children who exhibit behavior that interferes with their curriculum access. More specifically, ABA is applied as a special education service on a student's IEP.


Today ABA therapy is known as the only evidence-based practice for treating Autism in the world, as published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disabilities (Sam et al, 2019)

 

Because of its reliance on scientific knowledge, a therapist would recommend the best treatment option using data collected with from the case while improving the therapy through adaptation of the child’s behavior and personality.

 

At Growth Special Needs Therapy, we use a combination of the most contemporary approach of ABA, combining the Lovaas Method and the Verbal Behavior Therapy approach. We teach the way the child learns, and goals are set specifically for the child.
